Building Your Audience with Segments

How to create static and dynamic Segments in Tern to choose who receives your email campaigns.

Written by Brad Turner

A Segment is a named group of your contacts. You pick a Segment as the audience when you send a campaign.

Two Types of Segment

  • Static segment: a fixed list of contacts you choose by hand. You create one with the Choose contacts option. It only changes when you add or remove contacts yourself.

  • Dynamic segment: a group defined by filters (for example, "tagged VIP" or "has a trip to Italy"). Tern recalculates who's in it every time it's used, so new contacts who match are included automatically. You create one with the Use filters option.

How to Create a Static Segment

  1. Go to Emails and open the Segments tab.

  2. Select New segment.

  3. Enter a name, select Choose contacts, and select Create segment.

  4. Add contacts. Select Add contact on the segment's page, or select contacts on your Contacts list and use Add to segment in the bulk actions bar.

How to Create a Dynamic Segment

  1. Go to Emails and open the Segments tab.

  2. Select New segment, enter a name, select Use filters, and select Create segment. You'll be taken to the filter builder.

  3. Add a filter. Choose a field, an operator, and a value. Available fields include tags, date added, birthday, email, bookings, and trips.

  4. Combine filters. Within a group, choose whether to match all filters or any filter. Add more groups and choose how to join them with and or or.

  5. Check the preview. The Matching contacts panel on the right shows how many contacts match and what share of your contacts that is.

  6. Save.

Common Issues

A dynamic segment with no filters includes everyone.

A dynamic segment with zero filters resolves to all of your sendable contacts. This is how you email your whole book. Add filters if you want to narrow it.

The recipient count changed between building and sending.

A dynamic segment is recalculated when you review and again when you send, so the count can change as your contacts change. The final audience is set at send time.

A contact isn't included in a dynamic segment.

Dynamic segments only include contacts who can be emailed: they must have a primary email, must be marked Subscribed, and must not be archived.
