Commission splits when your agency works under a host agency

How your host's split, your own split and your agents' splits fit together, and what to set if you work on your own.

Written by Ken Ducusin

The short version

If you're the only person in your agency, set your own split to 100%. Your host takes its share before the money reaches your agency, so you don't take it out again.

The three splits

  • Host split: what your host pays your agency, for example 90%. Your host sets it, and some hosts lock it.

  • Your split: what your agency pays you. For an agency of one, 100%. You set it.

  • Agent splits: only if you have agents. Their share of what your agency receives. You set them.

How the money moves

The supplier pays your host $1,000. Your host keeps 10% and pays your agency $900. Your split is 100%, so you keep $900.

If you set your split to 90% by mistake, Tern takes 10% off twice and shows $810.

Set your split

  1. Go to Back Office → Settings → Commission Rules → Default Commission Split.

  2. Set it to 100% and save.

New splits apply to bookings going forward. To fix older bookings, see "When You Change Your Commission Split" in Managing Commission When Your Agency Works Under a Host Agency.

Prefer to keep the money in your agency? Some solo owners set their split to 0% and take withdrawals from the agency instead. That works too. Your agency still receives the full amount, but the "Commission received" tile on your dashboard will show $0. See How to configure your agency if you get commission statements from your host agency.

Check your host split

Go to Back Office → Settings → Team & billing, find your host, and open Host commission split. If you can't edit it, your host manages it for you. Contact your host to change it.

On each booking

  • Expected commission: the full amount the supplier pays your host.

  • Split: your split (100% if it's just you).

  • Received commission: only what your host actually paid your agency.

Your expected commission will look higher than what you receive. That's normal.

Troubleshooting

  • "Custom split is not allowed" when you submit a booking: your agency doesn't allow custom amounts and has no standard split. You're your agency's admin, so set a Default Commission Split (see above), or turn on Allow agents to request a custom commission amount in Back Office → Settings → Commission Rules.

  • An error on a booking under your host's credential: some hosts don't allow the Custom commission type. Pick one of your host's standard types, or Personal Travel for your own trips.

  • Your commission looks 10% short: your split is probably set to 90%. Change it to 100%.

  • Your dashboard shows $0 commission received: your split is probably set to 0%. That's fine if you want the agency to keep the money; set it to 100% if you want the tile to show your earnings.
