Passkeys let you verify your identity using your device's built-in security β such as your fingerprint or face β instead of a text message code or a separate authenticator app. They provide the same level of protection as other 2FA methods and are especially useful when you're traveling and can't reliably receive SMS.
What passkeys do
When you log in and are prompted for two-factor verification, you can use a passkey to confirm it's you with a single tap or glance. The verification happens directly on your device, so you don't need cell service or an internet connection to receive a code.
Passkeys work on devices that support biometric authentication or a device PIN, including most modern phones, tablets, and computers.
Before you start
You need an existing Tern account with two-factor authentication already enabled.
Your device must support passkeys. Most devices running iOS 16+, Android 9+, or macOS Ventura+ do.
You'll be setting up the passkey for a specific device. If you use Tern on multiple devices, you can add a passkey for each one.
Steps
Go to Settings and select the Security tab.
Find the passkeys section and select the option to add a new passkey.
Follow your device's prompts to register the passkey. Depending on your device, you may be asked to use Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN.
Enter a name for the device you're setting the passkey up on. Use something descriptive so you can identify it later, such as "iPhone 15" or "Work laptop."
Confirm the passkey is saved. It will appear in your list of registered passkeys on the Security tab.
How to use your passkey to log in
When Tern prompts you for two-factor verification after entering your password, select the passkey option and verify using your device's biometric or PIN. Tern will confirm your identity and continue to your account.
Managing your passkeys
You can add passkeys for multiple devices and remove any passkey at any time from the Security tab.
If you remove a passkey for a device, you'll need to use a different 2FA method (SMS or authenticator app) when logging in from that device, or set up a new passkey for it.
If passkey verification fails
If your device doesn't recognize you after several attempts, most devices will fall back to your PIN. If you're still unable to verify, use a different 2FA method or contact Tern support through the Help menu in your account.
