Getting Started with Campaigns (in Beta)

What Campaigns is, what you can do with it, and what you need in place before you can send marketing emails to your contacts.

Written by Brad Turner

Campaigns let you design branded marketing emails and send them to groups of your contacts, right inside Tern. You can find them under the Emails tab.

What It Does

Campaigns is Tern's email marketing tool. You build an email in a drag-and-drop editor, choose who receives it using a Segment, and send it now or schedule it for later. After it sends, you can track opens, clicks, unsubscribes, and more.

How It Works

There are three pieces to know:

  • Campaign: the email you design and send.

  • Segment: the audience you send it to. A Segment is a group of your contacts. See "Building Your Audience with Segments."

  • Subscription status: each contact's marketing consent, which controls whether they receive your campaigns. See "Managing Subscribers and Unsubscribes."

Campaigns are sent from your Tern email marketing address ([email protected]). Replies go to your own email, so when a contact replies you receive it directly.

Who Can Use It

To send a campaign to your contacts, you need all of the following:

  • A paid Tern subscription. Free trials can build and send test emails, but cannot send to contacts.

  • Your business name and business address saved in your settings.

  • No active sending hold on your account.

If any of these is missing, you'll see it listed as a blocker when you review your campaign.
