Overview

Very shortly we will be rolling out a brand new way of tracking commission status across all your trips and activities in Tern. In order to support these updates and improve your overall commission tracking experience, we've made a few changes for you to be aware of:

  • Commission status (per activity): we are changing commission status from something you change manually, to something that is determined based on expected commission dates / whether or not you have logged 'received commission'. These new statuses will also show up per activity on the 'pricing' tab.

  • New received commission section (per activity): you'll be able to input specific commission you have received instead of having to update the 'expected commission' field and move it to 'paid'. The experience here will differ for activities booked through an agency vs not (more below).

  • Commission overview (per trip): we have updated your commission overview per trip - with a new design, included the updated statuses.

  • Commission projections are for booked activities: estimated commission is pulled from "booked" activities, since you may or may not end up booking proposed items. We typically note the amount from unbooked activities separately.

How commission status used to work

Historically, you've had to manually change commission status. There were a few main problems with this:

  • We found this wasn't being used very often - a very small percentage of activities on Tern had a set commission status different from the default status

  • If the amount the supplier or your agency paid you was different from your expected commission, you had to overwrite that field. There wasn't a separate way of tracking 'actual received commission'.

We'd use these manual statuses to show a commission summary in your trip overview -

And in trip pricing

Finally - all projected commission looked at commission across any activity - not just activities that were actually booked.

New commission statuses (per activity)

The new commission statuses are:

  • Upcoming: expected commission date is in the future

  • Overdue: expected commission date is in the past

  • Received: at least one commission payment has been logged against the activity. Coming soon - a new 'partially received' status, to account for activities you are expecting more commission payments for.

  • Cancelled: you have marked the activity as cancelled after booking

How old statuses translate to new statuses

Old status

New status

Unpaid, Scheduled, and Expected

Booked activities with an unpaid, scheduled, or expected commission status will be considered 'upcoming' if there is an expected commission date in the future, or 'overdue' if there is an expected commission date in the past.

Overdue

'Overdue' status will be determined by expected commission date, not the manual status.

Paid

Received status will replace 'paid' status.

As a part of rolling out these changes, if you have a historical activity you have marked with a 'paid' commission status, we will:
- Automatically log a 'received commission' matching the expected commission amount & date with your commission split % applied
- That means those activities will maintain a 'received' (formerly 'paid') status
- If there are any activities with a paid commission status that haven't been marked 'booked', we'll mark them as booked as a part of this transition

New statuses will be reflected in Trip Pricing

The overview tab in Trip Pricing now has a new look and feel. You'll notice commission from unbooked activities has been split out from your top-line expected commission.

And you'll see the new commission statuses for each activity.

New received commission section (per activity)

We've added a new 'Received Commission' section under Expected Commission

If you haven't marked an activity as booked yet, you'll first be prompted to do so

If your activity is not associated with an agency, you'll see an option to add a 'Received Payment'

This allows you to log the exact amount you received, the currency you received it in, and the date you received it.

  • Use the + to add multiple payments

  • Use the trash icon to remove a logged payment

As a reminder, this will set the commission status to 'received' automatically.

If your activity is associated with an agency, you'll see payments as they are logged by your agency admin

New commission overview (per trip)

These new statuses will be reflected in Trip Overview Commission

  • If you'd like a refresher on what each of these statuses mean, jump back up to that section

  • Any activities that are not booked, but that you have added commission for will be noted at the bottom ($80.34 in the example below)
