A guide for advisors to report on sales and commission

Overview

Tern now supports Advisor Reporting - which allows you to:

  • Understand your total sales volume

  • Review received commission

  • Project expected commission

Each view also includes breakdowns by supplier to help you further understand and optimize your business.

IMPORTANT NOTE: this article focuses on reporting for Advisors.

Marking activities as 'Booked'

You'll notice a new 'Reporting' tab on your top nav

If you haven't marked any of your activities before as 'booked', you may see blank data. Tern only starts tracking sales and commission data after you mark an activity as 'booked'. That way you can still add pricing and expected commission to activities as you propose them to your clients, but it won't create noise by tracking things that you never end up booking.

Marking activities as 'Booked'

To mark an activity as Booked, go to the booking & pricing tab, and click on "mark as booked" under booking details. You can do this for trip activities, trip packages, and insurance.

You can adjust the booking date if needed, review the booking details (all pulled from the activity), and then confirm your booking:

To accurately report on received and expected commission, make sure you are also logging these things in Tern. If you want to learn more about how to do that, check out this article.

Sales report

The sales report shows gross sales across all of your bookings

  • Bookings: any activity, trip package, or insurance marked as "booked" in Tern

  • Gross sales: the total cost of all activities marked as "booked"

Bookings and sales are attributed to the month they are marked as "booked". You can also filter your entire dashboard down by the booking date, travel start date, or supplier of booked activities.

Supplier breakdown

This table shows the number of total bookings and gross sales, broken down by the "booking supplier" you have added to your activities.

Received commission report

This report shows received commission across all of your bookings

As you receive payments from suppliers (or from your host agency), you can log those payments in Tern. To learn more about how to do that, check out this article.

Commission earnings are attributed to the month they are marked as "received". You can also filter your entire dashboard down by the commission received date, travel start date, or supplier of booked activities.

This table shows the total commission received per supplier.

Expected commission report

This report shows expected commission across all of your bookings

As you book activities in Tern, make sure to fill out the expected commission amount, split, and date per booking. To learn more about how to do that, check out this article.

Expected commission is calculated by taking your % split of the expected commission amount you input. So if you expect to receive $100 commission for a booking, and your split is 80%, we'll project that as $80 of expected commission. If you are a fully independent advisor you can set your commission split to 100%.

Expected commission is attributed to the month of the expected commission date you input. You can also filter your entire dashboard down by the expected commission date, travel start date, or supplier of booked activities.

FAQ

I'm seeing a drop-down with multiple options to choose from on my Reporting Dashboard - what does that mean?

You'll see this toggle if you've marked activities as 'booked' through multiple agencies in Tern, or if you've marked activities as 'booked' through at least one agency, AND marked other activities as 'booked' not through your agency. If that's the case you can toggle between agency bookings / bookings not made through your agency. Depending on which option you select, you may notice different functionality.
